Lewd ‘ragging’ caught on cell
The otherwise pesky camera phone has finally come in handy - in nabbing the culprits in two campus “ragging” incidents that crossed all the lines.
The Andhra police cracked two cases of sexual abuse under the guise of ragging in engineering and medical colleges in the state. Five engineering students of GMR Institute of Technology at Rajam in Srikakulam district were arrested on Wednesday after they were caught on a camera phone sodomising two second year male students.
The incriminating images were handed over to the police by a junior student, who walked into the Rajam police station with the ‘evidence’ and alleged that six senior students had sexually assaulted the two second year students of the mechanical engineering department on the pretext of ragging. He showed them video clips - filmed on his cellphone - of the seniors indulging in oral and anal sex with the juniors.
Acting on this information and the video clippings, a police team led by Palakonda deputy superintendent of police PV Krishnaiah raided the GMR complex. The six students were identified and five of them were arrested under the provisions of the AP Prevention of Ragging Act, 1997 and for indulging in unnatural acts (sodomy) under section 377 of the IPC.
All five were produced in a local court on Thursday and remanded in judicial custody till September 21. The sixth accused is on the run. The college has suspended the accused - all from affluent families. Minister for technical education Pinnamaneni Venkateswara Rao has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
It was the same story at the Kurnool Medical College last week when three third year MBBS students - who had compelled their juniors to strip naked - were arrested on the basis of pictures recorded in a cellphone by rival senior students. The college suspended the three students.

it is very sad to hear about such incidences,stripping naked in the course of ragging is not bad. the mbbs students getting suspended for this is unfair.while the engg students being in second year got sodomised by seniors is very silly.they might be doing it with their consent,the fellow who was against them filmed it on cam and used it against them, it does not come under ragging.the police filing a case without recieving a complaint from the students who got sodomised projects light on the situation prevailing in our country.

well thats a fine work done by the junior student … this type of horrific crime should be dealt severly , sexually assulting a student in the name of ragging should be condenmed at all levels .!! its more shocking that students who are going to be future docs and engineers are indulged in such acts ……… such hopeless guys.!

The hostel/college administration needs to be vigilent and strict. The warden and the department head too should be suspended as its their duty too to ensure saftey of the students studying in their college. If they are active and seniors have fear of administration these things will be in control.
New Media should take the Principals view on the incidence as he has to be answerable for these acts. they are the one who wants to talk much when a star is added, then why not now?

i was horrified to see atleast a part of the Cell phone recorded film on the Zee Telugu TV channel, the other day. If the act of sodomy is hirrific, telvising the said MMS on TV channel, is way below the belt and under no stretch of Imagination can it be termed as journalistic standard. the downside of it being that the entire community boycotted the family of the victim and the sodomised boy’s mother committed suicide unable to bear the insult.
i join my friends in condemning the act however i place the order of convictions in the following fashion: 1) 6(5) students to be barred in all educational institutions and employment oppurtunities 2) TV news editor who has shown the MMS be charged with Sec.306 ( abetment to commit suicide) and 3) Mr. Rayalu be declared a Naxalite and be encountered and shot at the earliest.

this is where initiative comes into picture, does any teacher, parent take the extra step to educate these funloving youngsters what ragging really is?
they say no to ragging and make legal provision, but then people only find a way out,

root cause is students not knowing what to do due to negligence from students side, and equally teachers and parents side
