The dancing girls of Lahore, the cultural capital of Pakistan, are on strike in protest against the tide of Talibanisation that is threatening to destroy Mujra, an art form that has flourished since the Mughal empire.
The strike, which is supported by the theatres where they perform, was sparked by the decision of Lahore High Court last month to ban the Mujra, the graceful and elaborate dance first developed in the Mughal courts 400 years ago, on the grounds that it is too sexually explicit.
In the face of the strike and the lack of enthusiasm for alternative entertainment, the court has suspended its ban. It has, however, ordered dancers to cover their necks with shawls and wear shoes (they used to dance barefoot but the court deemed that too erotic). "Do they expect girls to dance in a burkha?" asks stage manager Jalal Mehmoud. "Mujra has been going on for so many years it is part of our culture."

mujra is not allowed in islam. mujra dancers r not respectable ladies. they all r call girls. from my point of view mujra should be banned in pakistan. this is not our culture. and people who are promoting such culture should be hanged immediately.

in theasedays in paki theaters during stage play , some dancers doing nude mujra, thats wy its ban. as we know paki n indian , not like nudity in dance or mujra. so its very simple,there is no protection for nudity , it should ban every where . otherwise it will brake the culture /.

I agree that mujras should be banned in Pakistan. Atleast those which contain explicit material. and watching girls on porn websites is one thing but letting someone to perform nudity is like allowing your own daughters, wives and sisters to perform it and then watching it or letting others watch it. i'm sure you guys won't wanna do that. Unlike some bastards who suggest that girls should. and i'd really like to teach that MARK guy that those who r committing suicide attacks r definitely not Muslims, even if they call themselves Muslims. Hurting innocent is strickly prohibited in Islam let alone killing someone. Mujra ar anything,if it is liked by present clerics and muslims or nto, it remains and continues to be a part of history; for, history is nothing but an accumulation of facts and events. Why are all these great religious guys visiting the site? To control if their mothers, sisters or wifes are there? These frustrated guys want to come at us ! For what ? religion is a personal thing, practie at home and be done with it.Do not indoctrinate everything that human life from a religious point of view.Sex , love are part of nature and we will have to realize this , in spite of our religious grouping. If you want to impose your views and spoil the moods of others visiting the site, prefer a Khoran and do not visit such sites, for, they are surely forbidden in Khoran.
