Sex Advice: Shocking behaviour of four year old son

Que. I have a four-year-old son who has started spending a long time in the bathroom under the pretext of "doing potty". When I checked on him, I was shocked to see that he was rubbing his penis. Is he masturbating or is he plain curious? I am extremely worried. Is this behaviour normal? How do I deal with it?

Ans. Please relax. It's not an uncommon behaviour. The young find the act pleasurable and curious. I wonder if he is copying someone who he has seen at school. Don't get angry. Ignore his action when you see him at it. Later, try and divert his mind towards other things. Try and get him to do his potty at a regular time. Consult a paediatrician.
